A very French, very idiosyncratic musical that while lacking any discernible 'songs' or dance routines manages to be one of the most affecting musicals ever written. Remy says he was inspired by American musicals, and yet a more non-American could hardly be imagined. Can we really pretend that an American studio in 1963 would endorse the story of pre-marital sex and the romance of marrying a 17-year old girl pregnant with another man's child and not feel the need to moralize or condemn? Only in France, and thank God for it.
All the cast are brilliant - charming and charismatic; the production design looks like a psychedelic gingerbread house; the score is exceptional; the singing genuinely heart-felt and moving; and the whole thing is carried off with such effortless confidence and unreserved joy that it's impossible not to fall in love with it. Les Parapluies De Cherbourg 1964
½ I've tried to watch this thing over and over again through the years, based on its reputation, but once they would start singing my attention would wander and I'd either fall asleep or leave it. My faux pas, baby, my big frickin' faux pas. Better than nearly 98% of musicals out there simply on theory alone, this very human arc of a love affair manages to comment as well on the art form of musicals, of romances, and even on tourism. And does it in another language. Beamer app mac serial.
Truly a well deserved reputation on this one, try to get through it and NOT see yourself and all your previous romances, I dare you. ½ Although the highpoints of the film are those of the traditional musical, namely the stars communicating their joys and sorrows through song, what makes 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg' so special is that all of the mundane connecting material is sung as well.
We get people singing about going to the hairdressers or putting the kettle on, even swearing in song! Catherine Deneuve is absolutely adorable at the start, but our sympathies are gradually transferred from her knocked-up shop-girl, first to the adoring jeweller she marries out of convenience, finally to the first lover who reluctantly abandoned her to complete his national service. By the end of the movie, tragically, Deneuve has paid the price of ignoring her heart by transforming into one of her typically chic, glacial blonds. The vibrantly coloured art direction assaults the senses like a Dulux sheepdog's wet-dream, and complete delight is only precluded by some gratuitous product-placement for 'Esso'.
An angelically beautiful Catherine Deneuve was launched to stardom by this dazzling musical heart-tugger from Jacques Demy. She plays an umbrella-shop owner’s delicate daughter, glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic, played by Nino Castelnuovo.
When the boy is shipped off to fight in Algeria, the two lovers must grow up quickly. Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colors, and told entirely through the lilting songs of the great composer Michel Legrand, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time.Rent $3.99. Les Parapluies De Cherbourg Script
A young girl separated from her lover by war faces a life altering decision.
Michel Legrand has made his fame and fortune from writing for films, but he has done significant work in jazz on an occasional basis. In 1957, he arranged a set of Dixieland and swing standards for a French orchestra (recorded on Philips), in 1958 he used three different all-star groups for the classic Legrand Jazz (with such sidemen as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Phil Woods, Herbie Mann, Bill Evans, Ben Webster, Art Farmer, and others), in 1968 he recorded a strictly jazz set with a trio and Legrand has written for albums led by Stan Getz (1971), Sarah Vaughan (1972), and on several occasions, Phil Woods. Several of his songs (such as 'What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life,' 'Watch What Happens,' and 'The Summer Knows') have been recorded many times by jazz musicians.
